Our Brief History
"Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that sow the seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt" Amos 9:13:
Our Redeemer Oromo Evangelical Church (Formerly Known as Oromo Lutheran church In Minnesota ) resulted from a Bible study group which was established 1987.
Individuals who came to the State found the necessity of encouraging each other by coming together for prayer and Bible study. Many of our people fled persecution in Ethiopia and were resettled in the Twin Cities area.
As the number of Oromo immigrants in the Twin Cities increased, the need for starting a formal fellowship became very important. As a result of this the Oromo Evangelical Lutheran Church was formally organized and registered with the state in 1993. In 1995 our church officially became a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) through the Minneapolis Area Synod, Although the church did not have a pastor until that, time, the Lord opened a door for Rev Melkamu Negeri and his family to come to the US towards the end of 1995. Rev. Melkamu started serving the already organized church on a voluntary basis, par time, then by 1997 as a full time pastor.
Within few years the church registered a tremendous growth. As a result of tack of enough space for the rapidly growing ministry, the church started considering another suitable site through the support of the Minneapolis Area Synod.
Consequently, the Holy Spirit moved Our Redeemer Lutheran Church to give their building to Oromo Lutheran Church. Accordingly, the church moved to its new site on May 29, 2005. In June 2007 the deed was officially transferred over to our church and on January 13, 2008 Our Redeemer Lutheran Church held its final service.
In recognition and memory of Our Redeemer Lutheran church, our congregation decided to adopt and change its name to' Our Redeemer Oromo Evangelical Church in Minnesota.
